Chip later released a statement on The Cater Center’s website.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs,” he wrote. “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

Jimmy Carter’s death comes on year after his beloved wife Rosalynn’s passing on November 19, 2023.

President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter were married for 77 years before she passed away. They shared four children – John William “Jack,” James Earl III “Chip,” Donnel “Jeff” Jeffrey, and Amy Lynn.

When Rosalynn passed away, The Carter Center released a statement on behalf of the family, containing a quote from President Carter that read,

“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

President Carter, who had been in hospice care, attended the memorial in a wheelchair, marking the final public appearance of his life.

With a talented pianist playing a hymn, President Carter was wheeled in on his wheelchair. He sat between his children, near President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. President Clinton, former First Ladies Hilary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump, sat nearby.

During the service, the couple’s only daughter, Amy, chose to read a letter her father wrote to her mother decades ago while he was serving in the Navy over 70 years ago.

“My darling, every time I have ever been away from you, I have been thrilled when I returned to discover just how wonderful you are. While I am away, I try to convince myself that you really are not, could not be as sweet and beautiful as I remember. But when I see you, I fall in love with you all over again. Does that seem strange to you? It doesn’t to me. Goodbye, darling. Until tomorrow. Jimmy.”

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, close friends of the Carters, were in attendance to perform “Imagine.”

As many could see during the live streaming of the funeral, President Carter didn’t look very well. Now, Jimmy and Rosalynn are together again…and forevermore.
