The American Idol finale was not only star-studded thanks to its incredible guest performers but also this week’s mentor – Jon Bon Jovi!
The first round showed Bon Jovi mentoring the final three contestants, Abi Carter, Will Moseley, and Jack Blocker, who all performed Bon Jovi songs. We can’t imagine singing a Bon Jovi song in front of Bon Jovi himself, but these three were up to the task!
Moseley kicked off the show with the band’s 2000 hit “It’s My Life,” followed by Blocker’s take on the 1988 song “I’ll Be There For You.” Carter rounded out the Bon Jovi round with “Bed Of Roses,” which Bon Jovi released in 1992.
For the second round of songs, the theme was “Hometown.” This week, all the finalists went back to their hometowns and chose a song that represented their love of where they came from.
Carter chose “Somewhere” by West Side Story, Moseley selected Montgomery Gentry’s “My Town,” and Blocker – who hails from Dallas, Texas – performed George Strait‘s “All My Ex’s Live In Texas.”
In his pre-taped package, Blocker was shown a video of encouragement from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who even invited Blocker to perform at halftime of one of their games! He then walked into American Airlines Center, where the Mavericks play, to perform for a nearly-sold-out crowd. Blocker spoke about how many amazing memories he had growing up going to Mavericks games with his dad.
He also visited the coffee shop where he first performed live, had a welcome home parade near his high school, where he and his wife, Georgia, went to school together.
Due to his close ties to his home state, it came as no surprise that he chose this George Strait classic!
Blocker started the song off pretty slow, but after the first chorus, he kicked it up a notch, and that’s exactly what judge Katy Perry had told him to do in previous weeks.
“That’s what we talked about! That footloose, fancy-free, I can play guitar with my eyes closed. That right there is your bread and butter!” Perry said.
His performance was well-received by fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Ritchie.
