Hear “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” like you never have before

Texas-born country star Cody Johnson has released a cover of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson’s famous song “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” His rendition was recorded live at the 58th Annual ACM Awards in 2023 during a tribute performance celebrating Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday.

The performance earned much praise online, with many fans requesting an official recording and release. Others commented that Cody Johnson is the “real deal” and credited him for keeping Texas country music alive.

Between the years of 2020-2023, CoJo has earned various nominations from the ACM Awards but has yet to take home a trophy. This year, the leads pack with five nominations, including the highest honor of the night – Entertainer of the Year.

The history of  “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”

Ed Bruce and his wife, Patsy Bruce, wrote the classic country song warning of the tough and rootless way of the cowboy lifestyle in 1975. The song performed well, reaching no. 15 on the Hot Country Singles Chart.

However, the tune reached a new level of fame when Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson recorded it for their 1978 duet album Waylon & Willie. Their rendition quickly reached the top of the charts, spending four weeks in the no. 1 spot.

The song was later chosen by the Western Writers of America as one of the Top 100 Western Songs of all time.
