Toby Keith has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since, only making a rare public appearance here and there. In November 2022, Keith made his first return to the stage when he was dining at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Lexington, Kentucky. During the ceremony, Keith’s fellow Okie, Carrie Underwood, paid tribute to him with a cover of his 1993 chart-topping hit, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”

That same month, Keith shared his only update regarding his health with CMT’s Cody Alan, saying, “I need a little bit of time to just rest up and heal up.”

“It’s pretty debilitating to have to go through all that, but as long as everything stays hunky-dory, then we’ll look at something good in the future,” Toby said.
