15-year-old Triston Harper is hoping to become the youngest American Idol winner ever and he’s pulling out all the stops to do it.

During Monday night’s American Idol Top 24 round, Triston Harper wowed the crowd with his rendition of Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country.” Harper was one of 12 hopefuls mentored by country singer Jelly Roll for the episode that was filmed at the Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii. This was also the first time contestants face a public vote this season.

Harper first wowed judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry during his audition where he performed Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up.” In the weeks since, the teen has continued to impress with original songs and country covers. In fact, fans have dubbed him “the next Garth Brooks.”

But, Triston has remained humble and has stuck with what caused fans to fall in love with him to begin with…smooth vocals and a country sound.

Ahead of his “God’s Country” performance Monday night (April 8), Harper spent time with his personal idol country music superstar Jelly Roll who shared some valuable advice.

“I love how unapologetically country you are,” Jelly Roll told the teen. “Luke’s heard the whole town of Nashville try to cover [“God’s Country”]. I want Luke off of his seat, baby.”

As Triston Harper sang “God’s Country,” the judges did as Jelly Roll predicted and came out of their seats and danced along. Following his performance, Jelly Roll declared that Harper could win the entire competition.

Lionel Richie agree, saying, “Young man, when you open your mouth that’s pure magic.” Katy Perry and Luke Bryan also agreed and praised Harper’s confidence and grit.

“You’ve got grit for days,” Perry said.

Luke said, “This is a big moment for a 15-year-old, y’all. This is tough….You’re gonna do so well in this and you’re gonna do so well for the rest of your career.”
