The film is poised to delve into the remarkable life and career of June Carter Cash, the iconic country singer-songwriter and the second wife of Johnny Cash. The trailer, released on Wednesday (Jan. 3), provides a glimpse into the documentary ahead of its streaming debut on January 16.

The preview provides a sneak peek at the archival footage showcased in the documentary directed by Emmy-winning documentarian Kristen Vaurio. It also offers an initial look at the A-list personalities contributing their insights and poses the central question of the film:

“Who is June Carter Cash?”

This question considers her numerous achievements and explores the dynamic of living in the shadow of her husband’s celebrity.

At the beginning of the trailer, country singer Kacey Musgraves poses the question, “Who is June Carter Cash?” and promptly answers, “Well, she’s a bad*ss b*tch, first off.”

The teaser then continues to hint at how the documentary traces her musical journey, from her initial performances in her family’s Americana group, The Carters, to her collaborations with Cash and her role in penning one of his most significant hits, “Ring of Fire.”

In addition to personal interviews with her family members, the documentary features insights from a select group of fellow country artists, friends, and long-time admirers. Notable figures such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Dunn, Larry Gatlin, Robert Duvall (her co-star in the 1997 film The Apostle), and Reese Witherspoon, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in 2005’s Walk the Line, all make notable appearances.

“She was tough and she was funny. If you’re married to Johnny Cash, you gotta be tough,” says Willie Nelson.

A Musical Love Story And Legacy

As revealed in the trailer, June revisits the story of how June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash first met, featuring an old video of Carter Cash recounting the story herself. The documentary then chronicles their marriage, spanning from 1968 until their deaths in 2003.

While collaborating extensively throughout their marriage, releasing four studio albums, and frequently touring together, June Carter Cash also enjoyed a flourishing solo career.

Her prominence with The Carters came well before they tied the knot, and she independently released four solo albums, two of which earned Grammy recognition. Even after her passing, she was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2009, leaving an enduring legacy and serving as an inspiration to women in the country music genre, among other notable achievements.

Per Carlene Carter, June Carter’s oldest daughter, the documentary “offers a great opportunity to realize that June was a star of television and music from an early age – decades before she became ‘Mrs. Johnny Cash.’ Steeped in the legacy of the Carter Family and as a solo artist, she always was – and, as seen through this film – always will remain a shining star in her own right.”

Catch the tale of talent, ambition, heartbreak, and loyalty. June debuts on Paramount+ on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
