Paramount+ announces a new documentary profiling music icon June Carter Cash to premiere on January 16.

Prior to her marriage to Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash was known simply as June Carter. Despite growing up in the midst of country royalty, she had already become a star well before exchanging vows. Now, her compelling story is set to unfold in a comprehensive documentary.

The documentary, titled “June,” is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ in the early months of the coming year.

Set to debut in the U.S. and Canada on January 16, the film will debut one day later in territories including the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, according to Deadline.

Her Early Years

Born to Maybelle and Ezra Carter, June Carter transcended her role as a family member by actively participating in the Carter Family band from the tender age of 10. Alongside her mother, aunt Sara, and uncle AP, she contributed to their musical performances. When the original family band ceased recording together, Maybelle initiated a new singing group featuring all her daughters — June, Helen, and Anita — with June taking the lead.

In addition to her musical endeavors, June made a mark on the screen, showcasing her acting talents in the film “The Apostle” and making notable appearances on television shows such as “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and “Gunsmoke,” among others.

June Carter, a recipient of five Grammy Awards, excelled as a singer, comedian, musician, actor, and author throughout her remarkable career. She had the privilege of opening for Elvis, gracing the screen alongside Robert Duvall and Jane Seymour, and co-authoring one of the most iconic country songs ever, “Ring of Fire.” Although she may have occasionally been in the shadow of her legendary husband Johnny Cash, this film ensures that she rightfully claims the spotlight.

A Tale Of Talent & Ambition

Before delving into the intricate narrative of June Carter’s life, the film highlights the rich history of country music and the profound impact the Carter and Cash families had on the genre. Through the presentation of rare and previously unseen archival material, the documentary also includes interviews with June Carter herself, along with family members, admirers, and friends. Notable figures such as Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, and Willie Nelson contribute their perspectives to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legacy woven by these influential musical families.

Per Carlene Carter, June Carter’s oldest daughter, the documentary “offers a great opportunity to realize that June was a star of television and music from an early age – decades before she became ‘Mrs. Johnny Cash.’ Steeped in the legacy of the Carter Family and as a solo artist, she always was – and, as seen through this film – always will remain a shining star in her own right.”

Carlene went on to say, “While some may not fully be aware of her many talents, influence, and just how much she mattered as an entertainer, this lovely documentary offers clear insight for everyone to see the true character and the joy shared.”
