Join The Ingalls This Summer As Their Story On The Prairie Is Told Anew

It’s been 94 years since the first novel in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series was published in 1932, and it’s been 52 years since the NBC series and televised films of Little House on the Prairie first graced the small screen.

Now, with Trip Friendly — the son of producer Ed friendly, who produced the cherished television series from 1974 to 1984 — picking up his father’s cause, Netflix will be reintroducing the Ingalls to a new generation of families.

Trip said in a press release, “It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st-century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series.”

Today, April 13, Netflix released the first teaser trailer for its Little House on the Prairie series, boasting that the series is “based on the beloved books.”

Chronicling the experience the Ingalls family went through when they moved by covered wagon from Wisconsin to Kansas in the late 1860s, Netflix describes its new adaptation of the series as “a transformed adaptation of Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books.”

Continuing, Netflix states, “The new ‘Little House on the Prairie’ is part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West. The series will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

Writing this new adaptation of the show is Rebecca Sonnenshine, who attributed the book series to her pursuing her current career, saying in a press release, “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.”

Sonnenshine went on to praise the cast, saying, “I am absolutely thrilled with the brilliant cast we have assembled. Each one of them brings something special to the Little House universe and will help make this story come alive for a whole new generation.”

Starring as the series’ protagonist, Laura, is Alice Halsey, who previously starred in Lessons in Chemistry. Accompanying her in the cast of the Ingalls family is Luke Bracey (known for Elvis and Hacksaw Ridge), as Pa; Crosby Fitzgerald, as Ma; and Skywalker Hughes, as Mary.

The trailer begins with narration by Laura offering a variation of the playful introduction Laura Ingalls Wilder gave at the beginning of Little House on the Prairie‘s first chapter, with Laura being heard as she says, “Once upon a time, Ma and Pa and Mary and Laura left the Big Woods of Wisconsin and moved to the prairie.”

With beautiful sunsets, and sumptuous natural lighting, the series feels like it’s capturing the beauty and excitement in the everyday, just as the book and original television series did.

Fans of the book will appreciate seeing in the trailer a shot of Pa playing the fiddle, which was memorably written of in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s novel.

In the fourth chapter of the novel, she writes:

“Softly Pa’s fiddle sang in the starlight. Sometimes he sang a little and sometimes the fiddle sang alone. Sweet and thin and far away, the fiddle went on singing … The large, bright stars hung down from the sky. Lower and lower they came, quivering with music. Laura gasped, and Ma came quickly. ‘What is it, Laura?’ she asked, and Laura whispered, ‘The stars were singing.’

This shot of Pa playing the fiddle in the new Netflix series appears to capture the beauty and magic of that memorable character moment.

Fans of the book will be hoping for more of the same.

Likewise, they’ll be interested to see how Bracey’s take on Pa compares to that Michael Landon, who portrayed Pa in the television series.
