Lee Greenwood Meets Newly Crowned CMA Entertainer Of The Year Lainey Wilson At Dallas Cowboys Game

Lee Greenwood knows how exciting it is to win a CMA Award. He won the award for Male Vocalist of the Year in both 1983 and 1984. His iconic patriotic anthem, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” also won the award for Song of the Year in 1985.

The 2023 CMA Awards were held on November 8. Lainey Wilson walked away as the big winner of the night, with a total of five trophies. The ceremony ended with her receiving the award for Entertainer of the Year.

Wilson became the first female artist to win the award since Taylor Swift in 2011.

Four days after the CMA Awards, Wilson attended a Dallas Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Greenwood was also in attendance, and the two country stars met at the game.

Greenwood took to social media to share a photo he took with Wilson. He also recognized her Entertainer of the Year win, writing:

Ran into the new CMA Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year at the Dallas Cowboys Game on Sunday! Great to see you Lainey Wilson!

Greenwood shared the same photo with a slightly different message on X, saying:

Lee Greenwood Recently Announced His Retirement

During a recent interview on The Brilyn Hollyhand Show, Greenwood confirmed that the rumors about his retirement aren’t just rumors. He truly plans to retire after 2024.

It’s not just a rumor. [2024] will be my last year to tour,” he said. Greenwood noted that his age is a factor (he turned 81 on October 27), and he wants to focus more on his family and his health.

I’ve had some surgeries. I have titanium knees, I have a titanium cage in my back with 10 screws…I just I don’t think I can do this much longer with the two boys in college,” he said.

He also wants to spend more time with his wife, former Miss Tennessee USA Kimberly Payne.

It’s only fair, I think, that I back away at this point and have no distractions but her and I and give these last few years that I will live to her and my two sons,” Greenwood said.

We wish Greenwood the best in his retirement! He certainly inspired artists like Wilson and the many others who have followed in his footsteps.
