Dwight Yoakam’s ’90s Country Hit Gets Modern Remake From Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson tipped her metaphorical hat to Dwight Yoakam by performing one of his classic songs for “Kellyoke” on her talk show. The track Clarkson covered was “Ain’t That Lonely Yet.”
Yoakam released “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” in 1993 as the first single from his album This Time.
Written by Kostas and James House, the song has Yoakam singing as a man who recently left the woman he loved. The woman tries to get him back by sending notes and calling him on the phone. Yoakam dismisses her, saying he “ain’t that lonely yet” to entertain welcoming her back into his life.
The song peaked at the second spot on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart and hit #1 on the Canada Country Tracks chart. It ranked at the 15th slot on the year-end chart in the U.S. and at #3 on Canada’s year-end chart.
“Ain’t That Lonely Yet” led Yoakam to his first Grammy win. He took home the trophy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1994.
