Even after more than two decades since his passing, Johnny Cash’s legacy continues to shine brightly.

His new album, Songwriter, released on June 28, highlights the profound impact he had on the world of country music. The album is a collection of demos he recorded back in the early 90s. So, how did we get so lucky to hear new Johnny Cash music in 2024?

Rediscovering Lost Tracks

The journey to Songwriter began when John Carter Cash, Johnny’s son, stumbled upon the long-lost tracks. Recorded in 1993, during a period when Johnny was between record labels, these songs had never seen the light of day—until now.

John decided it was time to revive these hidden gems. Enlisting the help of musicians like Marty Stuart, Dave Roe, and Pete Abbott, he helped breathe new life into the recordings.

John Carter shared with The Guardian when he announced the album in April, “Nobody plays Cash better than Marty Stuart, and Dave Roe of course played with dad for many years. They knew his energies, his movements, and they let him be the guide. It was just playing with Johnny once again, and that’s what it was. That was the energy of the creation.”

A Touching Tribute Through “Hello Out There”

One of the standout tracks from the album is “Hello Out There,” which has been accompanied by a beautiful music video. The black-and-white video stars Grace June Cash, Johnny Cash’s granddaughter. Six-year-old Grace is the daughter of John Carter Cash and Ana Cristina Cash.

Throughout the video, Grace is seen exploring the Cash family cabin. She discovers precious artifacts such as Johnny’s personal Bible, June’s banjolin, and a 1890s Steinway piano.

John revealed that “Hello Out There” was written by his father around the time of the Voyager spaceship launch. The song, with its reflective lyrics and haunting melody, is a perfect reminder of Johnny Cash’s lyrical genius.

“Hello out there, this is planet Earth, calling /

Hello out there, our net worth is falling /

We’re the third from the sun, we are blue and white, spinning /

If you wish upon a star, wish upon us tonight, we’re dimming.”

A Walk Down Memory Lane

The music video is filled with several Easter eggs for devoted fans. From family fishing poles to Johnny’s old Ampex tape recorder, each items tells a story of the Cash legacy.

The video also tugs at the heartstrings as Grace’s striking resemblance to her grandmother, June Carter Cash, is highlighted. Although Grace never met her grandparents, the video beautifully bridges the generations.

Sharing a sweet message on his social media, John Carter Cash wrote:

“Congratulations to my youngest daughter [Grace June Cash] who stars in the new music video for my father [Johnny Cash] released today. She is full of light, love and hope and has her grandmother June’s blue eyes…I truly believe my father is smiling today, if for no other reason than to see his granddaughter connecting with his music.”
