One year after Jimmy Buffett died of Merkel-Cell Carcinoma, his daughter took to social media to remember her late dad with a video she says “captured his spirit so well.”
Jimmy Buffett was a legendary singer-songwriter whose “island escapism” style transcended all genres, making him one of the most beloved artists of his time. Over the course of his career, he collaborated with numerous artists, including country stars like Alan Jackson (“It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere”), Toby Keith (“Too Drunk To Karaoke”), and Kenny Chesney (“Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season”).
When Jimmy Buffett died in September of 2023 at the age of 76, the music world mourned him and honored his incredible legacy. While Buffett was known as an amazing musician, he was also known as a devoted family man.
Jimmy Buffett was married to his wife, Jane Slagsvol, for 45 years at the time of his death.
Jimmy first met Jane in Key West, Florida, in 1975 when she was visiting the area for college spring break. Jimmy had recently moved back to Florida from Nashville, where he had tried his hand at a country music career. After finding only minimal success in the genre, Buffett decided to settle in southern Florida and put together his Coral Reefer Band.
Jane and Jimmy said they had an instant connection. As a result, Jane moved to Florida and the pair married two years later. They welcomed three children: Daughters Savannah and Delaney, and son, Cameron.

Following his passing, Buffett’s children shared touching tributes to their father.
Delaney penned a heartfelt letter about her dad, saying that he was a great man and one of the hardest working men she ever met.
“I knew my dad my whole life, but in his final days, I saw who he was: a man whose spirit could not be broken,” she wrote. “Despite the pain, he smiled every day. He was kind when he had every excuse not to be. He told us not to be sad or scared, but to keep the party going. And as much as I’d like to use that as an excuse to drink myself into oblivion worthy of his literary heroes, I know it’s not what he meant. Yes, he loved his weed and his wine, but the truth is, most of the time, he was just high on life, and that is what he wanted for everyone: to enjoy the fantastic trip that life can be,” Delaney wrote.
A year after he died, Delaney took to social media once again to shared a special moment she shared with her dad a few years before he passed. She explained in that she had helped her dad record a series of videos, a docuseries she directed in which he discussed some of his lesser-known songs.
In the clip she shared, that wasn’t included in the docuseries, she asked her dad what song is his favorite to cover. Without hesitation, he responded, “It’s a Fred Neil song.” He then started playing and singing Neil’s tune, “Everybody’s Talkin’.” Delaney said that this particular clip was one of her favorites “because it captures his spirit so well.”
She concluded her post by sharing some advice, saying: “It’s been a year, but it feels like yesterday we were together. Life is short. Spend it with the people you love. And keep every voicemail.”
