Jamey Johnson Debuts Powerful New Track

Country music legend and Grand Ole Opry member Jamey Johnson released a brand-new song, “Sober,” on Friday (August 30). The “In Color” singer first teased the song on August 22.

Johnson’s teaser included a photo of the song’s cover art. The black and white picture shows a person walking alone down an empty street, presumably at night.

In the caption, Johnson said that “Sober” is a song dedicated to “those who struggle with sobriety.” He added “…I understand.”

Johnson’s followers responded to the announcement, with many sharing their stories about their own struggles with sobriety. These fans thanked Johnson for releasing a song about such an important subject.

A few days before the song’s release, Johnson shared a video speaking about its meaning. He said:

Hey, anybody watching this video right now. I’m Jamey Johnson. I’m a singer, I write country music, and I’m about to put out a song called ‘Sober.’ And it’s for people who know the struggle.”

Listen To “Sober” In The Clip Below

“Sober” was released on all major streaming platforms on Friday (August 30). Johnson also released a lyric video to accompany the track.

The song includes simple instrumentation, with the sounds of harmonica, guitar, and piano accenting Johnson’s near-mournful singing. There’s even an instrumental break mid-song.

In the track, Johnson sings about a constant struggle to stay sober, saying, “It ain’t easy on the wagon. H— I lost more of my mind than I have found.” As the song continues, he reveals that even the local pastor has said, “It’s hard staying sober in this town.”

As the song nears its end, Johnson brings faith into the discussion, singing:
