George Strait Pays Tribute To Loretta Lynn With “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin'” Performance

A celebration of the life and legacy of Loretta Lynn was held Sunday, October 30, 2022 at the Grand Ole Opry House.

The Opry House was full of friends, fans and family of the late Loretta Lynn who died October 4, 2022 at the age of 90. Many of Music City’s biggest stars came out to honor Lynn through performances and speeches. One of the night’s most anticipated performances came from George Strait who took the stage to sing Lynn’s 1967 hit “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’.”

The song was Lynn’s first No. 1 country hit and also earned her the honor of being the first woman to top the charts with a song she wrote herself. (Loretta co-wrote the song with her sister Peggy Sue.) In late 1967, Loretta Lynn became the first female to be named Female Vocalist of the Year, due in part to the massive success of “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’.”

George Strait’s appearance at Lynn’s memorial service was only fitting as the two shared a friendship that lasted decades.

Following Lynn’s death, George Strait honored his friend by sharing a photo of them together with a caption that read:

“We’re sure going to miss Loretta Lynn. What an amazing woman and so unbelievably talented. Very thankful she shared that with all of us fans. God bless all of the family. Rest in Peace Loretta. See you down the road. — gs”
