One of traditional country’s biggest hits has been a fan favorite since its release in 1991.
When Reed Nielsen wrote “Except for Monday”, he knew it was a great song – he just didn’t know it would grace Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks in the top five!
The song describes how getting over someone can be difficult…
Heck, it might even take a full week!
“Except for Monday, which was never good anyway
Tuesday, I get a little side ways
Wednesday, I feel better just for spite
Thursday and Friday take too long
Before I know it, Saturday’s gone
But it’s Sunday now and you can bet that I’m all right”
Nielsen’s lyrics were taken to the next level by Lorrie Morgan‘s twangy, upbeat vocals. But what more could we have expected from the daughter of Country Music Hall of Famer…
Lorrie was born to George Morgan on June 27, 1959. The Morgans have been part of the country family for a long time – and members of the Grand Ole Opry since 1948! Her father was a “country crooner” and made “Candy Kisses” a number one hit on the Billboard country music chart.
It was no surprise when Morgan joined her father on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. At age 13, she was serenading audiences with her country sound. By 16, she was ready to take over his entire band.
A few years – and bands – later, Morgan signed with her first major label, RCA Records, in 1984. As her career picked up momentum, she put out her Something in Red album containing her hit song, “Except For Monday.”
It quickly moved its way to the top of the charts, ranking #4 in the U.S. on Billboard and #7 on Canada’s PRM Country Tracks. Around America, people were two-stepping to Morgan’s “Except For Monday.”
In a recently released video, Morgan revisits her classic hit and shows us she’s still got it…
Surrounded by fans and a few new friends in a diner setting – Morgan shows off a glittering guitar and her beautifully twangy voice.
The Morgan family name will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all classic country music fans. Her newest performance of “Except for Monday” is sure to bring back memories and get you dancing around like it is 1991!
