Craig Morgan Wrote “The Father, My Son, And The Holy Ghost” Following The Tragic Death Of His Son, Jerry
In 2016, Craig Morgan’s 19-year-old son, Jerry, died following a tubing accident on Kentucky Lake in Tennessee. But a powerful song about love, loss, and faith came out of Craig’s great tragedy. This song captivated country music fans around the world.
Craig turned toward his faith to cope with his loss, and that faith drove him to create a new piece of music.
Craig told PEOPLE he woke up in the middle of the night one evening and found himself singing a chorus to a song that didn’t even exist yet.
“It was 2:30 in the morning and there I was – singing the entire chorus in my head before I even woke up enough to put the words down on paper.”
He thought about going back to sleep, but something told him to get up and write the lyrics down. Over the next few hours, he penned the remainder of the song and named it “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost.”
Craig first performed the song during an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in July 2019. The Opry shared a video of his performance in September 2019.
Following that performance, he was approached by Ricky Skaggs. Craig told him he was glad Ricky got to hear the song, because he had doubts he’d ever be able to sing it again. Ricky encouraged him to keep singing it:
“But standing there was Ricky Skaggs, and he told me that I simply had to perform it again. I had to get through this and find a way to share this song with as many people as I could,” he told People.
Craig Released A Music Video After The Song Went To #1 On iTunes
After talking to Ricky, Craig made the song available on iTunes. When his good friend Blake Shelton heard it, he took it upon himself to help it claim the #1 spot on the iTunes chart.
Blake tweeted about the song multiple times, catching the attention of fans and other celebrities. Eventually, the song claimed the #1 spot on not just the iTunes country chart but also the all-genre chart.
Now, the song Craig never expected to share has a music video.
The simple video, directed by Ryan Mclemore, shows Craig in what appears to be a church basement. Once Craig starts singing, the video focuses on him and nothing else.
The video is free of distractions and draws your eyes to Craig and his changing emotions. As he nears the end, you can see his eyes grow red and swell with tears.
Be prepared to wipe away a few tears of your own when you watch the music video for “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost” below. This song and its music video are stunning works of art and powerful tributes to Jerry…
