This Year’s BMI Icon Award Recipient Is Randy Owen Of Alabama

Congratulations are in order for Alabama’s Randy Owen, as he’s been named the 2024 recipient of the BMI Icon Award.

On top of being Alabama’s lead vocalist, Owen has also penned many of the group’s biggest hits. He wrote “Tennessee River,” “Mountain Music,” “Christmas and Dixie,” and “Feels So Right,” among other tracks.

Owen’s talents have been recognized by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) many times over the years. He received the BMI President’s Award in 2000 and earned the Country Song of the Year award in 1989 for Alabama’s “Fallin’ Again.”

Now, Owen is being recognized with BMI’s highest honor, the BMI Icon Award:

Randy Owen’s impact on Country music is immeasurable and his songwriting has left an undeniable mark on the genre,” Clay Bradley, Nashville’s VP of Creative, said in a statement. “His talents have solidified Alabama as one of the most successful Country bands of all time and his memorable melodies and relatable lyrics continue to influence countless artists that follow in his footsteps. We are honored to present him with this year’s BMI Icon Award.”

The Meaning Behind The BMI Icon Award

Owen is the latest in a long list of legendary country stars to be honored with the BMI Icon Award. Past country recipients include Dolly Parton, Toby Keith, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.

According to BMI’s website, the BMI Icon Award “is given to exceptional songwriters in recognition of their unique and indelible influence on music makers over many generations.”

The award isn’t reserved for country artists. Past recipients from other genres include Stevie Nicks, Carole King, Sting, and Van Morrison.

Owen will receive the BMI Icon Award at the BMI Country Awards on November 19. The invitation-only event will also recognize the Country Songwriter of the Year, Country Song of the Year, and Country Publisher of the Year. The recipients of those awards will be revealed at the ceremony.

The BMI Country Awards will also highlight “the top songwriters and music publishers behind this past year’s 50 most-performed songs in Country music.”

Congratulations to Owen on being named the BMI Icon for 2024! The honor is well-earned.
