We’ve all got to start somewhere, right? Even those who we can’t imagine coming off as less than glamorous–such as the undeniably beautiful and talented Carrie Underwood–had to get through an awkward start in order to climb up the ranks. In a video she posted to Instagram, Underwood shows her beginnings as a big-haired little girl with a country music dream.

If you listen closely, you’ll be able to hear her undeniable twang and recognize her facial expressions–two things that haven’t changed since the star made it big after her winning stint on American Idol. The video transitions to showing Underwood singing the same song recently, showing fans how similar her voice sounds and how she’s never left her roots behind.
