Toby Keith passed away on Monday, February 5 following a battle with stomach cancer.

His family released a statement on his social media accounts in the early hours of Tuesday morning (Feb 6), which read:

Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

Toby left behind his wife of nearly 40 years, Tricia Covel, their three children, Shelley, Krystal, and Stelen, and several grandchildren.

Toby just did a sit down interview, where he revealed he was still undergoing cancer treatment.

He was first diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021, but didn’t reveal it to his fans until June 2022. While battling in private, he underwent surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Less than two weeks ago, Toby Keith sat down for a two-part interview with News 9 in his home in Oklahoma.

“This ailment…is devastating. You take it one day at a time. It’s a rollercoaster.”

In a previous interview with Bobby Bones, he revealed one of the surgeries he had to have stitched his diaphragm. That and three years of not singing made the possibility of a comeback nearly impossible. But Toby wouldn’t take no for an answer. He was determined to get back on stage to perform a full-length show for his fans.

Toby returned to the stage at the People’s Choice Country Awards in September 2023.

Along with receiving the first-ever Country Icon Award, Keith performed for the first time since his diagnosis. He performed his song “Don’t Let The Old Man In,” which he wrote for the Clint Eastwood film The Mule.

Following his PCCAs performance, Keith announced two nights of show scheduled for December 2023.

Those shows sold out so quickly, he added one more date. At these shows, he performed for over two hours, playing 23 of his hits from “Made In America,” to “Beer For My Horses,” to “I Love This Bar,” and of course, his patriotic songs.

In the middle of the show, he slowed things down a bit and performed “Don’t Let The Old Man In.” We didn’t know it then, maybe Toby did, that it would be the last time he would perform live.

Watch him perform it in the video below.

Toby Keith was the founder of the Toby Keith Foundation. The foundation helps support the OK Kids Korral, which serves as a home-away-from-home for families with children undergoing cancer treatments.
