Wynonna Judd, a Kentucky native and renowned country music superstar, showcased her vocal prowess by singing the National Anthem at the 150th Kentucky Derby.

A Stellar Performance At The Historic Event

The five-time Grammy winner mesmerized the audience with her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” just before the commencement of the race on May 4. Her performance added to the lineup of stellar acts by fellow Kentucky-born artists Carly Pearce, Brittney Spencer, Tori Kelly, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, and many others.

An Emotional Full-Circle Moment

Announcing the news, Wynonna shared on social media, “Kentucky, I’m coming HOME! From going to the racetrack as a little girl to now singing the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ during this MILESTONE year, it’s such a full-circle moment.”

She further expressed her excitement by posting another photo on her social media account wearing her Derby fascinator, sharing, “I’m so excited that I’ve been wearing my Derby fascinator around the farm.”

Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Wynonna Judd, 59, has made significant contributions to the music industry throughout her career, both as a solo artist and as part of The Judds with her late mother, Naomi Judd.

During a special interview with PEOPLE, Wynonna delved deeper into the importance of performing the National Anthem at the Kentucky Derby. The opportunity to sing at this prestigious event holds a special place in her heart, as she fondly remembers the days spent watching horse racing with her family.

“I grew up going to Keeneland,” Wynonna recalled of the track in Lexington, Kentucky. “Standing on the backside as they come around and hearing the thunderous sound of the hooves hitting the dirt, I was just always overcome with emotion. I still think about it. I think to this day, besides having my children, it’s one of the greatest memories of my life. My sweet Papa was there every single year, and he took me.”
