Grace West may only be 19 years old, but she has a voice fit for singing traditional country music. This is something she proved when she covered a Pam Tillis hit during auditions for Season 23 of The Voice.
West sang “Maybe It Was Memphis.” Tillis recorded the song twice, with her most famous rendition being from 1991. It was the fourth single off of her album Put Yourself in My Place.
“Maybe It Was Memphis” reached the third spot on the US Hot Country Songs chart following its release.
The song was nominated for two major awards. It was nominated for Song of the Year at the CMA Awards and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.
As a country boy to the core, Voice coach Blake Shelton knows “Maybe It Was Memphis” extremely well. He enthusiastically sang along with West when she covered the song during the auditions.
It didn’t take long for Shelton to press his button for the talented teen’s performance. Niall Horan quickly followed his lead.
They were the only two coaches who turned for West’s performance. But everyone seemed to love her sound.
Horan gave West quite the compliment. He said, “Your voice is impeccable.” Horan also praised the “sweet tones” of West’s voice and called her “a real born storyteller.”
Shelton took things one step further. He compared West’s voice to Tillis’, saying, “I actually hear Pam Tillis in your voice.” Kelly Clarkson agreed with his comment.
Obviously, Team Blake seemed like a natural fit for West. She knew that, and picked Shelton as her coach!
Shelton only had one spot left on his team when he turned for West. Since he’s leaving The Voice after Season 23, she was the last artist he turned his chair for…EVER.
Head below to watch West’s outstanding cover of “Maybe It Was Memphis.” You’ll see why she was deserving of the last spot on the last Team Blake.
