Understandably, Stelen Covel – the only son of late country singer Toby Keith – has not made a public appearance since his father’s passing last month.

Toby Keith passed away on February 5, 2024 at the age of 64.

After battling stomach cancer for over two years, Toby Keith passed away surround by family, as announced on his official social media pages.

His loved ones, friends, and fans took to social media to remember the legend.

Just a few days after Toby’s passing, his son Stelen took to Instagram to remember the man he called his “guiding star.”

“You held a passion that was greater than mountains and it radiates through every lyric and chord. In the everlasting echo from the legacy of your music, you leave me strength and faith to lean on in the silence that follows,” he wrote.

Stelen finished his emotional post by writing, “The only thing I truly ever wanted in life was to make you proud. I promise I will continue to make you proud. It’s not goodbye forever; it’s just goodbye for now. I love you cowboy.”

Toby was selected as the Modern Era inductee, while the Veterans Era inductee is John Anderson. The Recording and/or Touring Musician inductee is James Burton.

Brooks and Dunn were on hand to announce the inductees and while introducing Toby Keith, Ronnie Dunn said, “To accept this honor on behalf of Toby, please join with me in welcoming his son, Stelen Covel, to the stage.”

After shaking both Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn’s hands, Stelen said to the crowd,

On behalf of my whole family, we want to thank the Hall of Fame. It’s an honor to stand here and represent my father. He’s an amazing man, husband, father, and artist. And I just want to thank everybody for being here, thank you.”

He kept his speech short and sweet, but you could tell in his voice that he was emotional.

This appearance also marked his first public appearance since Toby passed away.

The entire Covel family has been keeping quiet since his death, and we understand why. He was their patriarch, their biggest fan, their guiding light, as Stelen previously wrote. Him being gone has left a big hole in their hearts and we will pray for them to heal during this time. Watch Stelen’s appearance and speech below.
