The iconic show The Waltons just lost an integral member of their family.

Tom Bower is an American actor renowned for his diverse roles across film and television, particularly noted for his work on the iconic TV series The Waltons. Born in 1938 in Denver, Colorado, Bower began his acting career in the 1970s, building a reputation for his versatility and depth.

On The Waltons, a beloved series set in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II, Bower is best known for his portrayal of Dr. Curtis Willard. He joined the cast in the fifth season in 1976 as Dr. Curtis Willard and quickly became a favorite among fans. Dr. Willard’s character brought a fresh dynamic to the show, blending medical expertise with personal charm and becoming vital to the Walton family and their community.

Dr. Willard eventually became the husband of Mary Ellen Walton, portrayed by Judy Norton. Mary Ellen was the eldest daughter and third child of Olivia and John Walton.

Mary Ellen and Curtis were married in Season 5, Episodes 7 and 8. Two years after their wedding, they welcomed a son named John-Curtis Willard in July 1940. A month later, his character was called to serve in the army as a doctor. In September 1941, Dr. Willard was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Three months later, Mary Ellen found out he had died. The real-life bombing of Pearl Harbor took place in December 1941, making the character’s death feel more real.

Years went by, and Mary Ellen found love again. In 1945, she found out Curtis was alive and well, living in Florida. She traveled to find him, and they eventually got divorced. That was Bower’s last episode on the show, but he made an impact among fans.

Beyond The Waltons, Bower’s career spans over five decades and includes a wide array of roles in film and television. He has appeared in notable movies like Die Hard 2, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and Out of the Furnace. His TV credits are equally impressive, including guest appearances in popular series like The X-Files, Breaking Bad, and True Blood.

Throughout his career, Tom Bower has demonstrated a remarkable ability to embody diverse characters, making him a respected and enduring figure in Hollywood.

Bower passed away on May 30.

Mary Miller, Bower’s sister-in-law, confirmed with The Hollywood Reporter that he died in his sleep on May 30. Bower is survived by his two children, four grandchildren, and his brother and sister. His was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Ursula.
