“Hopelessly Devoted to You” was not included in the original stage production of the musical Grease. The song was created for the 1978 film adaptation, which starred John Travolta as Danny and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy.

Newton-John performed “Hopelessly Devoted to You” during an emotional moment in the film. That scene is now known as one of the most memorable moments in the entire movie.

“Hopelessly Devoted to You” was included on the official Grease soundtrack and reached #3 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song.

After Newton-John passed away on August 8 at the age of 73, many people paid tribute to her by singing or speaking about “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”

The country music trio The Chicks had a concert in George, Washington on Saturday (August 13), just five days after Newton-John passed away. They wanted to honor her during their show, so they included “Hopelessly Devoted to You” in their setlist that night.

Member Natalie Maines addressed the crowd, saying:

We lost a worldwide sweetheart last week, Olivia Newton-John. I thought I was Olivia Newton-John from like [ages] four to twelve, and then I only wished I was Olivia Newton-John. So we worked up today at soundcheck a little Olivia Newton-John song.

From there, the Chicks moved into their heartfelt performance of “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” Watch them sing the beloved song in the video below.

Newton-John was a true icon, and she will be missed.
