“Mama He’s Crazy” By The Judds Stands The Test Of Time As One Of Country Music’s Greatest Love Songs

Lainey Wilson has always admired Wynonna Judd. Her respect for the “No One Else on Earth” singer has been evident for years, and she’s even had the opportunity to work with her.

In 1984, eight years before Wilson was born, Wynonna and her mother, Naomi, released their song “Mama He’s Crazy.” Wynonna takes the lead on the track, which has her gushing about a remarkable man in her life.

She tells her mama that she’s “never been so loved” before. Her new beau thinks she “hung the moon and stars,” and is absolutely crazy about her.

Fans were smitten with “Mama He’s Crazy” and sent it to the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. By the end of 1984, it ranked as the third most popular country song of the year.

Over 41 years later, when fans think of the best country love songs, “Mama He’s Crazy” is one of the first that comes to mind. So it makes perfect sense that the song was remade for the 2023 Judds tribute album.

The reimagined recording featured Lainey Wilson singing with Dolly Parton:

“Mandelyn, my manager, called me and said, ‘We’ve got this opportunity to be a part of The Judds tribute record.’ And I immediately was like, ‘Well, duh.’ I mean, they’re the soundtrack to my childhood,” Lainey said while being interviewed on The Bobby Bones Show. “And then she came back and said, ‘They’re thinking about the song.’ And I said, ‘Okay. Done.’ And she said, ‘Well, they’re thinking about getting Dolly on it too.’ I about passed out.”

Lainey has since had the opportunity to work with Wynonna. The singers paired up to cover “Refugee” for a Tom Petty tribute album released in 2024.

It has been a career highlight to work together on this song” Lainey said about the experience.“I cherish our life-long friendship so much. Wynonna is the real deal y’all and I’m really proud of what we did with this one.”

More recently, Wynonna and Lainey reunited during Day 3 of CMA Fest in Nashville. Wynonna led a special “Girls Night Out” show at the Ascend Amphitheater, which also featured Sara Evans, Little Big Town, The War and Treaty, and Noah Cyrus.

Of course, one of the show’s highlights was when Lainey appeared onstage to sing “Mama He’s Crazy” with Wynonna. Lainey started off singing solo with her arm wrapped around a smiling Wynonna. She made it a little over halfway through the song before Wynonna jumped in, her powerful voice soaring through the room.

Their affection for each other was made clear when Wynonna said, “I love you,” to Lainey at the end of the song. Lainey returned her feelings and called Wynonna her “red-headed sister.”
