Shania Twain Explains Why She Started Wearing Wigs

Shania Twain has always been known for her fashion sense. The outfits she wore in music videos such as “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” are instantly recognizable…even to those who aren’t overly familiar with her music.

Now 57 years old, Twain continues to wear fun and bold fashion pieces. She told Fox News Digital she is fully embracing her body at this stage in her life.

“As we get older especially, we do tend to get more, shy or more critical of our bodies. Our skin starts [to] sag, it’s just part of growing old,” she said. “I plan on aging naturally.”

Twain added, “…That also means being comfortable in your skin and instead of hiding it, embracing it and enjoying it.”

The “Giddy Up” singer certainly seemed to be enjoying herself at the CMT Music Awards on April 2. She was honored during the ceremony as the recipient of the Equal Play Award.

Twain rocked a sheer black and red dress with cutouts on the hips and a slit in the skirt. She complemented her outfit with tall black heels, sparkly jewelry, and a red wig.

Later, Twain changed into a purple set with a cropped top and shorts. She accessorized with tall black boots and a matching black cowboy hat. She continued to wear the red wig throughout the night.

“For me fashion is a powerful tool that helps to convey my personality and express my creativity and other than getting to hang out with my friends for the night, it’s one of my favourite things about attending award shows!” Twain said in a post on Instagram. “Life is too short to wear boring clothes!!”

This wasn’t the first time in recent months that Twain has worn a wig.

She donned a pink wig when she attended the People’s Choice Awards in December. Twain then wore a long blond wig as a guest on The Late Late Show at the beginning of 2023. In February, Twain attended the Grammys while wearing a bright red wig with bangs.

So why has Twain been wearing a lot of wigs lately? She explained the reason while speaking with E! News at the CMT Music Awards.

“Over the years, I have had many different styles,” she said. “I’m playing more with color right now and I’m enjoying that because I’m going gray.”

Twain added, “As I go gray, I’m like, ‘I might as well toy around with different colors.'”

She said once she does go fully gray, she could see herself changing her hair color even more often. “I might change my hair color every week, Why not? I’ll have an empty palette. I’m experimenting with that.”

For Twain, she’s treating her ever-evolving hair color like she’s always treated clothes. “It’s almost an excuse to play with color and embrace it,” she said about going gray. “I just enjoy playing around with it, like fashion.”
