On Dec. 5, 2019, country radio stations around the nation kicked off the 30th Annual Country Cares St. Jude Radiothon. The first radiothon for St. Jude was in 1989 with hopes that country singers and fans alike would come together to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

According to their website, “it began when Alabama lead singer Randy Owen challenged the country community to rally around St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”

Since its inception, these radiothons have raised over $800 million for the hospital, which is incredible because when parents take their children there, they don’t get a bill. Their only worry is intended to be their child and not how much everything costs.

Country Radio host Bobby Bones’ radio station participates in the radiothon every year. Because he’s based in Nashville, Tennessee, he can get some big-name country singers to come in, speak about their involvement with St. Jude, possibly even meet a patient or two, and also perform a couple of songs.

During the first couple hours of 2019’s radiothon, Scotty McCreery stopped by and graced us with two acoustic performances, one being Garth Brooks’ “The Dance.”

“The Dance” means a lot to McCreery, who isn’t a stranger to performing Brooks’ 1990 song. It was a song he performed in the first-ever singing competition he entered when he was 14 years old and has been singing it ever since. He’s even performed it on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Along with “The Dance,” McCreery performed his poignant song “5 More Minutes,” something he wrote after his grandfather died and wishing he had just five more minutes with him. Sadly, many parents can relate to this song, which is why he decided to perform it on this very occasion.
