Ronnie Bowman Wrote “Never Wanted Nothing More” With Chris Stapleton, And Kenny Chesney Recorded It

Another way you can honor Ronnie Bowman is by revisiting his songs, including one he wrote for Kenny Chesney.

Bowman and Chris Stapleton joined forces several years ago to write a little song called “Never Wanted Nothing More.” The track has the narrator recalling the highlights of his life. As he looks back on his treasured memories, he proclaims that he has never wanted anything more from the world.

Some of the lyrics are:

Katie laughed, and my mama cried when they heard me say “I do.”
Her little ring is a little thing, but it’s all I could afford.
Now she’s mine, all mine till the day I die, and I never wanted nothin’ more
.”

Chesney recorded “Never Wanted Nothing More” and released the track as a single in 2007. It reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA.

One of the most special things in music is to hear a songwriter perform a song they wrote for someone else. After Bowman passed away, an old video of him singing “Never Wanted Nothing More” resurfaced.

The video, which was released in 2024 and filmed at Rory Feek’s Homestead Hall, opens with Bowman speaking about the song. He shared that he and Stapleton originally wrote it as a bluegrass song, but Chesney gave it a different style.

It’s a song that undoubtedly changed both writers’ lives. Stapleton has admitted that much, once saying it “bought me a house.”

Bowman’s 2024 performance of “Never Wanted Nothing More” was uplifting and joyful. As one of the people who wrote the song, you can hear how much he cared about each and every lyric.
