Willie Nelson’s Son, Lukas Nelson, Has A Band Called Promise Of The Real…Who Just Announced Their Hiatus

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real are going on hiatus for the foreseeable future.

The band, often called POTR, formed in Los Angeles in 2008. Lukas, who is Willie Nelson’s second youngest child, serves as the group’s lead vocalist/songwriter and also plays guitar and piano.

POTR has released eight albums in their 15 years together. Their most successful releases were 2017’s self-titled album Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and 2019’s Turn Off the News (Build a Garden). Those records reached the #2 and #19 spots on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.

POTR is well-known for their work on the 2018 A Star is Born remake, which starred Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, and Sam Elliott. Lukas helped write eight of the songs featured on the film’s Grammy-winning soundtrack. He and POTR also appeared in the film as the backing band for Bradley Cooper’s character, Jackson Maine.

Lukas and POTR have collaborated with several major artists over the years, including Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Lady Gaga, and, of course, Lukas’ dad, Willie Nelson.

Why Is Promise Of The Real Taking A Break?

On Monday (June 3), Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real announced they’re going on hiatus. They shared the news in a post on their official social media pages.

After 15 unforgettable years, Promise of the Real has decided to take a well-earned hiatus, and begin a new creative chapter in all of our lives,” the band said in their statement.

POTR shared that Lukas plans to continue writing, recording, and performing. The other members will also “pursue [their] own projects and artistic ambitions.”

However, the group made it clear this won’t be “goodbye” forever. They said:

We continue to love playing together, and we intend to work together again in the future, both individually and as a group. For now, you can see the band out on the summer 2024 dates. Thanks to all the Realers for your endless support. You’re the best fans in the world. We love you, and we’ll see you down the road.”
