Conway Twitty would have celebrated his 87th birthday on September 1, 2020. The legendary singer passed away on June 5, 1993 at the age of 59.

Earlier in 2020, Twitty’s longtime singing partner and close friend, Loretta Lynn, remembered him on the anniversary of his death. “He was one of the best men I have ever known,” Lynn wrote in a touching tribute she penned for Twitty on social media.

So when Twitty’s birthday came around, Lynn once again took some time to remember her dear friend.

First, she spoke about how much Twitty’s death affected her. She said his passing was also hard for her husband, Oliver “Doo” Lynn, to come to terms with as well:

I wish everyday [sic] that Conway was still here,” she wrote. “Losing him nearly killed me and Doo both. He was like a brother to me.

Then, Lynn spoke about Twitty’s talents as a singer and entertainer. She believes his talents were never fully recognized during his lifetime:

I always felt like he deserved more accolades than Country Music gave him,” she said. “This little Arkansas boy was an entertainer through and through and his voice was unrivaled.”

Finally, Lynn ended her message by writing about how much she missed Twitty. She described how they would have celebrated his birthday together if he was still alive:

I miss you, Conway,” Lynn wrote. “If you was here I’d bake you a cake and laugh at your corny jokes! Happy birthday. I’m so glad you were born.”

Lynn and Twitty had such great chemistry when they sang together. Because of this, many people were under the impression they were romantically involved with each other.

But that wasn’t the case. In the PBS special Loretta Lynn: Still a Mountain Girl, Lynn said they were never anything more than friends.

I loved Conway, as a friend,” she said, before going on to describe what their relationship was like. Check out the clip below to hear what she had to say.
