Country Rebel Recipes

Loretta Lynn wasn’t only an award-winning country singer. She was also an award-winning cook.

Loretta was such a great cook that she once published a cookbook called “You’re Cookin’ It Country.” The book features more than 120 of Loretta’s favorite recipes, including recipes that her mom used to prepare for her growing up, and plenty of her own favorites. The cookbook also contains stories from the Coal Miner’s Daughter’s life. One of our favorites is the story of how she met her husband, Doolittle.

According to Loretta, she met her future husband at a pie social when she was only 13 and he bid on and won the pie that she baked. After he had bid “a heck of a lot of money” on the pie, they both discovered that she had made the pie with salt instead of sugar.

“That was all the pie we ate for five dollars, which was a heck of a lot of money in those days and in that town, even for a good pie,” Loretta wrote in her book Loretta Lynn: Coal Miner’s Daughter.

Doo, who was 21 at the time, asked if he could give her a ride home. She said that she was too scared to ride in his Jeep, so he walked her to her door instead and they shared her first kiss. “I can’t explain it, but it felt so nice to be kissed by this boy that I fell in love,” Lynn recalled, adding that immediately after their kiss, Doo ran into a fence post and bloodied his face. “I always thought it was my kiss that knocked him down.” In the early 1980s, Doo and Loretta appeared in several Crisco commercials together. Doo gushed about Loretta’s cooking and she promoted the product and showed off her own skills in the kitchen. Her pie crust was often a highlight of the commercials. And while we love Loretta Lynn’s pie crust recipe, we enjoy what she puts in the crusts even more!

One of our favorite recipes of Loretta’s is Apple Butter Pumpkin Pie. This simple recipe will make even a novice baker feel like they are a pro. Check out the recipe below and if you give it a try, let us know what you think!
