Lee Greenwood showcased his saxophone skills alongside Dailey & Vincent, performing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

Jamie Dailey took to social media, revealing that he personally called Greenwood and invited him to be a part of their performance.

“Last week I called Lee and asked him to come to the Grand Ole Opry and play saxophone on the old Brenda Lee Christmas classic hit, ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree’ with us and I asked him if he’d stick around afterwards and sing his big song. He told me he’d love to do it. Last night he walked out on stage after our first song and surprised the Opry audience with his saxophone and played the song with us and he absolutely nailed it! He did awesome!”

Following a remarkable rendition of the classic Christmas song, Greenwood then took a seat at the piano, preparing to perform his iconic hit, “God Bless the USA.”

Dailey later commented on the performance, stating, “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

“Everyone was on their feet. Young, middle aged and old. Lee delivered a powerful performance and I couldn’t have been more moved by it. Lee Greenwood is a great singer, writer, musician and human being. May God continue to bless him and his lovely wife Kim and their family. And, may God Bless the U.S.A!”

About The Song

“God Bless the USA” went far beyond what Greenwood expected when he wrote it in the back of his tour bus in 1983. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles chart when originally released in the spring of 1984.

Additionally, CBS News voted “God Bless The U.S.A.” the most recognizable patriotic song in America.

Greenwood said, “USA is the song I always felt the need to write. I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast and to instill pride back in the United States. The song represents my family, my community and those men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy.”

His Musical Journey

Music has always been a part of Lee Greenwood’s life. He started playing the piano when he was seven and the saxophone at 12. By the time he finished high school, he played almost all the instruments in the orchestra and was the drum major for the marching band.

Fun fact: Lee Greenwood skipped summer school, intended for saxophone lessons, and played hooky on the baseball field.
