In 1955, the song “Unchained Melody” was first written to be the theme for a prison movie titled Unchained. Ten years later, the Righteous Brothers recorded their version and took it to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Thanks to the 1990 movie Ghost, the song gained popularity once again. A new recording was released and the original was re-released. For eight weeks, both versions were on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Unchained Melody” has become a standard, recorded over 1,500 times in multiple languages. This number doesn’t count live cover versions, like Kelly Clarkson’s on January 28, 2021.

She kicked off her talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday (Jan. 28) with her “Kellyoke” take on the classic tune. Standing on her dimly lit stage and surrounded by market lights on the floor, the singer performed a slowed-down rendition of the Righteous Brothers’ classic.

Her performance went over well with fans who commented on the video. Read some of their reactions below.
