80-year-old country music legend Ronnie Milsap is taking a step back. He isn’t retiring, per se, but he is slowing things down and cutting back on live performances.

Milsap wanted to celebrate with some of his famous friends during a final show in Nashville. The show was held on Tuesday (October 3) at Bridgestone Arena.

Performers included Kelly Clarkson, Little Big Town, Trace Adkins, Keith Urban, Scotty McCreery, Sara Evans, Ricky Skaggs, and many more.

Clarkson delivered one of the standout performances of the night. She covered “It Was Almost Like a Song.”

The Story & Stats Behind “It Was Almost Like A Song”

Hal David and Archie Jordan co-wrote “It Was Almost Like a Song,” which Milsap released as a single in 1977. The track reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. It ranked at the fifth spot on the year-end chart for 1977.

“It Was Almost Like a Song” also crossed over to claim the 16th spot on the all-genre Hot 100 chart.

“It Was Almost Like a Song” was the eighth #1 hit of Milsap’s career. He’s since amassed over 30 country chart-toppers, and has the third highest amount of #1 country hits ever. Only George Strait and Conway Twitty have more #1 songs than he does.

Among all of those hits, “It Was Almost Like a Song” remains one of the most recognizable pieces in Milsap’s catalog.

Clarkson is no stranger to singing Milsap’s music. She’s covered “Smoky Mountain Rain” and “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It for the World” on The Kelly Clarkson Show before.

It’s clear Clarkson is a huge fan of Milsap’s work.

Clarkson added to her collection of Milsap covers by performing “It Was Almost Like a Song” during his final Nashville show. She actually had the honor of kicking off the concert with her performance.

It was extra meaningful, since Milsap has referred to “It Was Almost Like a Song” as his all-time favorite track.

One attendee happened to capture Clarkson’s performance on camera, which you can watch below. It was a beautiful tribute to Milsap!
