Posthumous Waylon Jennings Album To Be Compiled From Newly-Discovered Recordings

It has been 24 years since Waylon Jennings passed, but his music lives on in a very real way. In 2025, his son Waylon Albright Jennings, known as Shooter Jennings, announced that he had found long-lost recordings while digging through his dad’s old tapes. He describes the discovery as “a plethora of music by Waylon and the band at the peak of their abilities.”

Among those were recordings and outtakes in the production of the first season of The Dukes of Hazzard from 1979. Waylon Jennings famously recorded the iconic theme song for the show, which ran from 1979 to 1985.

These newly-discovered recordings have been crafted into a compilation album titled When the Balladeer Met the Dukes. The new record promises to spotlight Waylon’s “iconic collaborations and storytelling voice, including rare and unreleased material.” The songs are backed by his original band, the Waylors.

When the Balladeer Met the Dukes is set for a physical-only release through Son of Jessi, an imprint label underneath Black Rock Country Media, owned by Shooter Jennings.

When the Balladeer Met the Dukes To Be Released On Record Store Day

The newly compiled When the Balladeer Met the Dukes project will be released exclusively on a neon orange vinyl LP. Only 1,500 copies will be produced, and they will be made available to fans on Record Store Day. The album will not be available for online streaming.

Record Store Day is an annual celebration of “the unique culture of a record store and the special role they play in their communities.” Each year, limited numbers of special vinyl and CD releases, as well as various promotional products, are created for Record Store Day. They are available for purchase in-store only.

This year, Record Store Day will occur on April 18th, 2026. Tyler Childers, Kaitlin Butts, Brandi Carlile, John Prine, Billy Strings, and more are also planned to participate.
