The Baz Luhrmann-directed Elvis movie was one of the most popular films of 2022. The movie and its stars earned immense praise, with a large part of that praise going to Austin Butler, who played Elvis Presley.

Austin won the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his performance. Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley were watching from the audience as he accepted his trophy. Austin thanked the two women for opening up to him during the filming process.

Just two days later, Lisa Marie passed away at the age of 54.

Lisa Marie was one of Austin’s most vocal supporters. Before the Elvis movie ever premiered, she said:

“In my humble opinion, his performance is unprecedented and FINALLY done accurately and respectfully. (If he doesn’t get an Oscar for this, I will eat my own foot, haha.)”

The Oscar nominations were announced two weeks after Lisa Marie passed away. Austin earned a nod for Best Actor, and the Elvis movie itself scored seven other nominations.

Elvis was nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.

The 2023 Academy Awards were held on Sunday, March 12 in Los Angeles, California. Much to viewers’ shock, Elvis did not win a single award.

Austin also lost in the Best Actor category. Leading up to the ceremony, many people felt the award would either go to him or Brendan Fraser for his performance in The Whale. Brendan ended up winning.

Although Elvis didn’t win any Oscars, there’s no denying the film’s impact and popularity. What did y’all think of it?
