It’s no surprise that late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon is a huge music fan. He incorporates his love for every genre while hosting The Tonight Show. Sometimes he impersonates singers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, but on more than one occasion, he gets his celebrity guests to join him.
Well, Fallon was at it again on Tuesday night (Sept 4) when Academy Award-nominated actor Ethan Hawke was a special guest on The Tonight Show. Hawke did his best Willie Nelson impression – gray pigtails and all – and sang the country legend’s 1980 hit song “On The Road Again.”
Fallon, as Cash, took the lead on the next verse, but the song took a turn we weren’t expecting.
“I like staying here / Life is better when I’m staying here / Just sit at home, might watch TV, and have a beer / Honestly, I’d love to just stay here,” Fallon sang, insinuating that he didn’t want to join Nelson/Hawke on the road.
The two entertainers went back and forth in a parody called “On The Road Again” vs. “Let’s Just Stay Here” that will make you laugh out loud! All Hawke’s Nelson character wants is to go out on the road with his buddies, and Fallon’s Cash just wants to stay back and sit in recliners with them. Eventually they ask the opinions of their fellow Highwaymen, who give hilarious responses.
Nelson has yet to comment on this skit, but we’re sure he’s enjoying it as much as we are. Props to The Tonight Show‘s costume department – their outfits and wigs were definitely on point!
