In an interview with Johnny Carson, Dolly Parton explains why her husband doesn’t watch her perform.

On January 19, 1977, the country music legend made her first ever appearance on the Tonight Show, performing a couple of her songs, including “Higher and Higher” and “Me and Little Andy.” She also spent some time answering a few of Carson’s burning questions, one of them being why her husband doesn’t watch her perform.

“It’s a funny thing. He never has seen me perform on stage and I’ve been in the music business for years…It makes him nervous, I think, to see me.”

Dolly further explained that her husband isn’t the biggest fan of her music, but it’s not out of any disrespect towards her. They had a mutual understanding when they married.

“He loves me and we have a great relationship, it’s just that I’m not one of his favorite singers, but that’s not really why he don’t watch me or go to shows. It kind of makes him kind of nervous, I guess.”
