Before her success in the country music industry, Wilson visited Big D and Bubba at the 101.5 KUNE radio studio in March 2021. She entertained listeners with her performance of her straightforward song, “Things A Man Oughta Know,” from her debut album Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’. The album also included a song Lainey wrote and lives by, “WWDD,” or “What Would Dolly Do?” in honor of one of her favorite female country artists, Dolly Parton.
During the interview, Wilson delivered an outstanding performance that included a tribute to Parton with her rendition of “9 to 5.” Wilson shared she loved playing the song live as it is widely known and appreciated by the audience. The duo was impressed with Wilson’s songwriting skills, musical talent, and ability to stay true to herself. Let us know your thoughts on her performance!
Lainey Wilson Meets Her Country Music Idol for the First Time
Wilson’s love of Parton was instilled in her at a young age and woven into her music through the years. She shares with Music Mayhem that it wasn’t until the 2023 AMC Awards she got her chance to meet her divine inspiration.
“The way that we met was at the ACMs, she was presenting Female Vocalist Of The Year and she called my name and that’s how I met her,” Wilson said, reminiscing on the moment she met her musical hero.
“It was the most surreal moment… It was like, I mean, one of the biggest moments of my life for two different reasons,” she explained. “She was just everything I imagined and more. They say don’t meet your heroes, but she’s just got a heart of gold. I think if we were all a little more like her the world would be a much better place.”
Lainey Wilson Expands Her Talent From Stage to Screen

According to Mark Deming’s the Lainey Wilson Biography on AllMusic,
“Wilson’s voice is clear and strong, with an unapologetic Southern accent, and her songs are tough but heartfelt contemporary country with an edge that has its roots in vintage Southern rock and classic rock, as well as a dash of modern-day pop.”
Wilson made a career leap when she became a cast member of the popular TV series Yellowstone. In the show’s fifth season, she portrayed the character of singer Abby, where she also introduced her original song, “Smell Like Smoke.” 7 of her songs since season 2 have been included on Yellowstone’s soundtracks.
