A Recent Injury Forced Crystal Gayle To Cancel A Show Overseas

Country music legend Crystal Gayle planned to perform at the Your Roots Are Showing conference in Belfast, but had to withdraw due to a recent injury.

Gayle was part of the lineup of artists scheduled to sing during the conference’s opening concert on Tuesday (January 13). She also intended to participate in on-stage programming throughout the conference week.

However, on January 10, Gayle shared she had to cancel her appearance. A press release from Gayle’s team explained that she recently injured her meniscus, and doctors advised her not to travel.

I was truly looking forward to coming to Belfast—singing a few songs, sharing some stories, and spending time with everyone,” Gayle shared in a statement included in the press release. “But my doctor tells me this knee isn’t ready for those overseas miles just yet. I promise I’ll be ‘Ready for the Times to Get Better’—just not at 30,000 feet next week. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope we can make it up to you soon.”

The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that functions as a “cushion” in your knee. When someone tears their meniscus, they can experience pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased range of motion.

The Mayo Clinic says, “Conservative treatment — such as rest, ice and medication — is sometimes enough to relieve the pain of a torn meniscus and give the injury time to heal on its own. In other cases, however, a torn meniscus requires surgery.”

Crystal Gayle Provides Update On Her Health

Crystal Gayle wants to keep her fans informed while she recovers from her injury. She shared a health update with PEOPLE after canceling her Belfast engagement.

Sadly, 75-year-old Gayle says the injury has taken “a toll” on her “mentally and physically.”

These things happen, and you don’t want it to,” she said, adding, “I’ve never had anything like this…mentally, you’re going through a ‘Why me?’

Gayle seems uncertain about what the future holds for her in terms of recovery. “I know people have [recovered from this type of injury], and there are all different types of surgeries they do,” she said. “So we’ll see what I’m going to do.”

However, Gayle seems hopeful she’ll soon be able to return to the stage. She said, “I can go and sit and sing, but it does put you in a different place mentally … it is harder to get around, but hopefully in the near future, it won’t be.”

Gayle’s next show is currently scheduled for February 12 in Laughlin, Nevada.

I’ve had a great career,” Gayle told PEOPLE. “I’ve had so many wonderful people behind me, behind the scenes, as well as people coming to the concerts. And I feel very lucky.”

We’ll be praying for Crystal Gayle’s quick and complete recovery!
