Conway Twitty’s “Twitty City” May Be Torn Down Following Tornado

A devastating tornado struck middle Tennessee on December 9. Many structures were damaged by the storm, including the former home of country music legend Conway Twitty.

Known as “Twitty City,” the property includes multiple homes Conway built for his family. The property later became a major tourist destination in the 80s.

Conway passed away in 1993, at the age of 59.

“Twitty City” was purchased by the Christian TV network Trinity Broadcasting Network after Conway died. TBN closed “Twitty City,” and turned it into an entertainment complex.

After the December 9th tornado damaged the property, TBN thinks it may by time to tear the structures down.

News Channel 5 out of Nashville cites a statement from Frank Amedia, who spoke on behalf of TBN at a Hendersonville Planning Commission meeting:

Unfortunately, it’s a public fact, TBN was highly under-insured on that site, so now we’re at a position if we’re going to put money into fixing old things than the new things aren’t coming.”

Conway Twitty’s Daughter, Joni, Responds To News That His Home May Be Destroyed

As News Channel 5 reports, TBN already started making plans to construct a new production studio and housing for senior citizens on the “Twitty City” property. Now, if they tear down the structures, they can use the land for the new projects.

Conway had four children: Michael, Kathy, Joni Lee, and Jimmy. Joni spoke with News Channel 5 about the possible demolition of “Twitty City,” making it clear the Twitty family doesn’t want to see the property destroyed.

“There’s no question. We would much rather drive by and see it standing because Dad worked so hard to build this place and make it a special place for fans to come and enjoy and for our family to live,” Joni said.

While it saddens her, Joni knows that things are out of their hands:

“It breaks our hearts, but they own the property now,” she said. “There’s not much we can do to stop it. I think it’s probably been in the plan a lot longer than the tornado because you don’t just come up with that plan. They weren’t using the property at all.”

News Channel 5 reports that the Hendersonville Planning Commission voted down the proposal to tear down “Twitty City.” The plan will move on to the Hendersonville Board of Alderman and Mayor to be voted on in two weeks. Another vote will follow at the next meeting, unless it doesn’t pass on its first reading.
