After Charlie Daniels passed away on July 6, John Travolta sent his condolences to his family. John starred in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy, in which Charlie appeared and played his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”
John continued to hold Charlie in high regard through the years, and wanted to reach out to his widow, Hazel, and son, Charlie Jr., to let them know he was thinking of them after Charlie’s death.
Charlie’s team shared John’s sympathy note on Charlie’s official Facebook page. The note read:
âDear Hazel and Charlie,
We were very sorry to hear of Charlieâs passing. Our thoughts are with you at this time.â
Charlieâs team thanked John and referred to him by his Urban Cowboy character’s name, writing, âThank you, âBud,â much appreciated.â

Less than a week later, the roles were reversed, as Charlie Jr. found himself sending condolences to John after he lost one of the most beloved people in his life.
On July 12, John announced that his wife of 29 years, actress Kelly Preston, had died following a two-year battle with breast cancer. Tributes to Kelly began to flood social media, with country artists such as Toby Keith, Shania Twain, and Kenny Chesney all sharing their sorrow over her death.
John also received condolences from Charlie Jr., who reached out to him on his dad’s official Twitter account:
“Last week, John Travolta sent his condolences for the passing of my father, now the entire CDB family wishes to do the same for John on the passing of his wife, Kelly,” read Charlie Jr.’s message. “So sorry for your loss, John. Prayers headed your way.“
Later, Charlie’s team shared an old photo of Charlie and John on the set of Urban Cowboy. It was a photo that Charlie often reposted on social media.
“Thinking of John Travolta on the day of his wife’s Kelly’s passing,” read a short accompanying statement from Charlie’s team.
We too, send our prayers to Kelly and Charlie’s families and loved ones during this sad time. May both Kelly and Charlie rest in peace.
Tune in below to watch Charlie’s performance in Urban Cowboy. This film gave him the chance to build a lifelong connection with John, and that connection remains even though Charlie is no longer with us.
