Brooks & Dunn make a lyrical swap amid Diddy controversy

While many country lyrics are timeless, one classic Brooks & Dunn song needed an update. The duo’s 2005 hit “Play Somethin’ Country” was originally written with the following reference in the first verse:

“Yeah, the band took a break, the DJ played P Diddy
She said, I didn’t come here to hear
Something thumping from the city”

“Play Somethin’ Country” was released on Brooks & Dunn’s album Hillbilly Deluxe. It topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, becoming their 20th and final no.1 single (barring any future new releases).

However, no DJs are playing P Diddy these days. The disgraced musician and producer was arrested in September on multiple charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Many victims have spoken out against Diddy, whose legal name is Sean Combs, and while the case is ongoing, the 55-year-old could spend many years behind bars.

It is no surprise that members of the entertainment industry are now distancing themselves from Diddy as a result.

During the recent Hondo Rodeo Fest in Arizona, Brooks & Dunn made a timely lyrical swap that had the audience cheering. They sang:

“Yeah, the band took a break, the DJ played something sh*tty
She said, I didn’t come here to hear
Something thumping from the city”

Brooks & Dunn reimagine “Play Something Country” with Lainey Wilson

This is not the only renovation that the catchy tune has seen this year. In September, Brooks & Dunn announced their next project – a compilation album titled Reboot II. The record will be a collection of 18 classic Brooks & Dunn songs reimagined with the help of 18 additional country artists.

Among the featured artists is powerhouse country star Lainey Wilson. Wilson lent her talents to a new recording of “Play Something Country.” The single was one of the few that dropped before the full album release, which is set for Friday, November 15th.

The original lyrics remain intact for the new album version, likely because it was recorded before the Diddy controversy became public.
