Toby Keith Shares Positive Cancer Update, Says He Hopes To “Go Back To Work”

Things are looking up for Toby Keith as he is seeing positive progress in his fight against stomach cancer.
In an interview with the Oklahoman prior to his Toby Keith & Friends Golf Tournament, the “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” singer revealed that his stomach tumor has shrunk and he has hopes of returning to the road this fall.
“I’m feeling pretty good,” Toby said. “Basically, everything is in a real positive trend.”
He added that if he can gain the energy back to do a full-length show, he hopes to get back on the road by the end of the year.
“I’ve got more wind,” he said. “And I’m thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere just to see if I can get through two hours.”
“All I gotta do is see if I can get through two or three nights of work and get a little break in this chemo, and we’ll go back to work,” Toby added, saying that he’s ready!
Keith also revealed that he continues to undergo chemotherapy treatment, is receiving immunotherapy and is seeing a nutritionist. In addition, he feels better and is seeing improvements on his tests.
“I’m about another eight weeks from my last scan,” said Toby. “So I expect next time I look for that tumor to be even less — and I’ve only got one that’s shown up.”
Toby Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021.
He shared the news with fans in an Instagram post six months later. He said he needed time to “breathe, recover and relax” and immediately canceled all booked shows so he could focus on his health.

Toby’s interview with the Oklahoman is only the second time he has discussed his diagnosis since revealing it to the public. In November 2022, the singer sat down with CMT Hot 20 Countdown’s Cody Alan for his first interview and said he was doing well but needed some time.
“I’m thinking about…I’m thinking about getting back to fightin’ shape. I need a little bit of time to just rest up and heal up,” the 61-year-old said. “It’s pretty debilitating to have to go through all that, but as long as everything stays hunky-dory, then we’ll look at something good in the future.”
