Did You Know That Rhett Akins Is Thomas Rhett’s Dad?
Few people can say they’ve been babysat by country music icon Reba McEntire…but Thomas Rhett can!
Thomas is one of the biggest stars to emerge in country music in recent years. He’s known for hit songs such as “Die a Happy Man,” “Country Again,” and “Marry Me.”
It turns out that Thomas’ love for country music is genetic. His dad is beloved country singer and songwriter Rhett Akins.
Rhett scored a string of country hits during the 1990s, including “That Ain’t My Truck,” “She Said Yes,” and “Don’t Get Me Started.”
His last single was released in 2009, and his last album dropped the previous year. Since then, Rhett has penned a ton of hit songs for other artists, including Blake Shelton’s “Honey Bee,” Jon Pardi’s “Dirt on My Boots,” and Luke Bryan’s “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day.”
Rhett has also co-written several of Thomas’ songs, including “Star of the Show,” “Get Me Some of That,” and “It Goes Like This.”
Reba McEntire Once “Babysat” Thomas While He Played Backstage With Her Son Shelby Blackstock
As one of country music’s up-and-coming stars in the ’90s, Rhett got the chance to go on tour with Reba McEntire in 1995 and 1996. Thomas, who was born on March 30, 1990, would have been five or six years old at the time.
Thomas recently stopped by CMT to play a game called “Most Likely To.” During the game, he held up a picture of a country star he felt was “most likely to” do a certain thing.
CMT’s first question was, “Who is most likely to be the best babysitter?” Speaking from experience, Thomas raised Reba’s picture. Then, he told a funny story about a time she “babysat” him at a concert.
“Reba has babysat me,” he said. “My dad used to tour with Reba. This one time, me and her son Shelby [Blackstock], were playing with some toy or something that we were arguing over. And Reba came and stopped that really fast. Nothing would fly under Reba’s watch.”
Years later, Thomas collaborated with Reba himself. She recorded guest vocals for his song “Be A Light,” and they sang together at the 2020 CMA Awards.
As CMT’s game continued, Thomas also said he would trust Reba to pick him up from the airport. He doubled down in the comments on CMT’s video, writing, “Who wouldn’t want @reba to pick them up from the airport?”
Thomas also felt Reba would make a great addition to a supergroup with Post Malone, Riley Green, and himself. As he put it, “Reba…for the win every time.”
