Season 25 of The Voice kicked of Monday night and viewers saw Reba McEntire gain her first team member of the season when Tae Lewis chose her over John Legend.

Tae Lewis took the stage to perform Keith Urban’s 2002 hit “Somebody Like You” during Monday night’s (Feb. 26) The Voice Season 25 premiere. The 31-year-old North Carolina native brought his smooth vocals to the song and immediately impressed returning coach John Legend. Just when it looked like Legend would be the only chair turn, sophomore coach Reba McEntire pushed her button in hopes of landing the singer on her team.

“I loved your performance,” Legend told Lewis.

First-time coaches Dan + Shay praised Lewis’s vocals and regretted not turning their double chair when the singer revealed that he was a big fan of theirs. Shay Mooney defended their decision not to turn around, however, saying that when Reba turned around they got scared.

“You’re a phenomenal talent. Clearly a seasoned veteran. I loved your voice,” Mooney told Lewis before encouraging him to join Team Reba. “This is a pretty clear winner on who you should choose, in my opinion. You got the Queen of Country Music over there. I didn’t want to stand in the way.”

John Legend wasn’t going to let Tae Lewis go without a fight and argued against Mooney’s claim that Lewis should pick Reba. But, in the end, Lewis did pick Reba, giving the country queen her first team member of the new season.

“I’ve been in the business a very long time. And I could help you, whether it’s vocal or it’s your staging,” Reba promised. “I would love to have you on my team. We’d have a blast.”

Who is Tae Lewis?

According to his website, Tae Lewis learned to love music in church, “sparked by Gospel melodies and a serendipitous encounter that led him to love country music at just 13.” Lewis’s family didn’t encourage him to pursue the genre at first, but “immersed himself” with the music of Dan + Shay, Rascal Flatts and Vince Gill and worked to develop his own sound.

Tae eventually moved to Nashville and has been actively pursuing a career in country music for 7 years.
