Lainey Wilson Sings Ode To “The King Of Country” George Strait With Cover Of His Holiday Song “Christmas Cookies”

George Strait has been nominated for the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year Award more times than any other artist…19 times to be exact. “The King of Country” has won the award three times, most recently in 2013.

Currently, the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year is Lainey Wilson. Her win was remarkable, as it was her first time ever being nominated in the category. It was only her second year being nominated at the CMA Awards overall.

Wilson has been in the business for years, but truly broke onto the scene following the release of her single “Things a Man Oughta Know” in 2020. Fans are now starting to discover some of her older or lesser-known material, including her cover of Strait’s fun holiday tune, “Christmas Cookies.”

The History Behind George Strait’s “Christmas Cookies”

“Christmas Cookies” is known as one of the greatest original country Christmas songs ever. Aaron Baker wrote the tune, and Strait recorded it for the 1999 album A Country Christmas. The album contained holiday songs by popular country stars at the time, including Martina McBride, Kenny Chesney, and Reba McEntire.

In “Christmas Cookies,” Strait sings about the irresistible cookies his wife makes for Christmas each year. Toward the end of the song, he jokes:

“Every time she sticks another batch in the oven. There’s 15 minutes for some kissin’ and a huggin’. That’s why I eat Christmas cookies all year long!”

“Christmas Cookies” peaked at the 33rd spot on the Hot Country Songs chart after its initial release.

“Christmas Cookies” has since been covered by many artists, including Tim McGraw, Scotty McCreery, and Phil and Kay Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. And of course, by Wilson.

In October 2021, she shared an official “Visualizer” video to accompany her version of the song. The video contains clips of Wilson baking her own Christmas cookies while wearing her signature bell-bottoms.

Her adorable French Bulldog, Hippie Mae, also makes an appearance in the video!

Also in 2021, Wilson performed her rendition of “Christmas Cookies” on the CMA Country Christmas holiday special. Her sugary sweet performance was a highlight of the evening.
