Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away in his home in Plains, Georgia. Carter was survived by his 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

His four kids are named John William “Jack,” James Earl III “Chip,” Donnel “Jeff” Jeffrey, and Amy Lynn. Carter shared his children with his wife Rosalynn, who he married in 1946. His wife passed away a year before the late president, and he will be buried beside her.

His son Chip shared a statement about his father after his passing. Chip said:

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

Chip highlighted his father’s humanitarian work and his love as being what he will remember about his father.

Jimmy Carter’s Humanitarian Work

The one-term president spent his years post-presidency modestly in his hometown. Besides writing and being with his family, Carter spent his time on humanitarian efforts.

He founded the Carter Center in 1982 in the hopes of eliminating human suffering by preventing and resolving global conflicts. His work with the Carter Center gained him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

He worked as a negotiator with North Korea and aided in the release of prisoners from Nicaragua in 1986.

Carter commented on his time after the presidency in a 2006 interview:

“Certainly my reputation has been better in the post-presidential years than maybe in the White House.” He continued on to say, “But I think that when people look back on what we did in the White House, I think there’s a lot there of justifiable pride.”
