Video Of Grandson Singing Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High On That Mountain” Beside His Grandfather’s Grave Goes Viral
In a heartfelt display of love for his family’s patriarch, a grandson stood next to his grandad’s grave and delivered one of the most emotional renditions of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” that we’ve ever heard.
In late August 2025, Roger McMurray posted a video on TikTok of his son singing at his grandpa’s funeral. Based on the video’s comments, the young man’s name appears to be Walker.
The video shows Walker bowing his head and taking a moment to compose himself before he starts singing. He delivered a graveside performance of Vince Gill‘s “Go Rest High on That Mountain, his voice soaring through the cemetery in tribute to his grandad.
Walker clearly struggled to get through the performance. He wiped tears from his eyes, and his voice broke several times.
But the grandson powered through, delivering a poignant performance of “Go Rest High” that surely would have made his grandad proud.
The video of Walker’s tearful performance went viral. At the time of this writing, it has over 1.5 million views on TikTok.
Once you watch the video below, you’ll understand why his performance has touched the hearts of so many people worldwide.

The Story Behind “Go Rest High”
“Go Rest High” has often been performed at funerals since its release in 1995. That makes sense, considering Gill wrote the song in tribute to two people who passed away.
Gill first started writing “Go Rest High” in 1989 following the death of fellow country singer Keith Whitley. But Gill didn’t finish writing the track until his own brother, Bob Coen, died of a heart attack in 1993.
The song, featuring Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless on backing vocals, reached the 14th spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. It won Best Country Song and Best Male Country Vocal Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.
Gill has frequently performed “Go Rest High” in tribute to country stars who’ve passed away, including Joe Bonsall, Loretta Lynn, and George Jones.
Gill’s tribute to Jones was especially emotional. He performed the song with Loveless during Jones’ funeral service at the Grand Ole Opry House. He eventually became so overwhelmed with grief that he couldn’t continue singing.
Vince Gill Releases Extended Version Of “Go Rest High”
Gill always had a feeling that “Go Rest High” was unfinished. He eventually wrote a third verse, which he introduced during a live performance in 2019.
For years, the only place fans could hear that third verse was at one of Gill’s shows. Then, to celebrate the song’s 30th anniversary, Gill released an extended version of “Go Rest High” that features the third verse.
A few days after the extended recording’s release, Gill had Lainey Wilson join him onstage to sing “Go Rest High” at the Primetime Emmy Awards. They delivered a heart-tugging rendition of the song, which they sang during the ceremony’s “In Memoriam” segment.
