Dolly Parton Brings In Chris Stapleton To Collaborate On Her Rock Album, Rockstar

Dolly Parton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. After that, she promised to record her first rock and roll album.

That album, titled Rockstar, was released on November 17.

Rockstar contains a blend of original songs and covers. Many of the tracks are collaborations…and Parton enlisted some of the biggest names in music to help her craft the record.

Just a few of the many artists featured on Rockstar are Miley Cyrus, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Nicks, Sting, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. Chris Stapleton also joins Parton on track #13, which is a cover of Bob Seger‘s “Night Moves.”

How Dolly & Chris’ Rockstar Duet Came To Be

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Parton was asked how she chose the people she collaborated with on Rockstar. She said in some cases, she reached out to the song’s original artist to sing with them. In other cases, a different artist would end up singing with her instead.

That’s how her duet with Stapleton came to be. As Parton explained, Seger originally planned to sing “Night Moves” on Rockstar. But Parton sings in a higher key, and that was difficult for Seger to match.

Parton recalled, “Bob Seger was having trouble with his voice and so he couldn’t work with me on [“Night Moves”], and I love Chris and I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to call Chris and see if he’ll sing with me.'”

Stapleton agreed, but even he doubted how he’d sound singing in Parton’s higher key. She remembers him telling her:

“‘Dolly, that’s in the wrong key.’ He said, ‘But I’ll do my best. I’ll do some ad-libs and I’ll sing some harmonies. I’ll do whatever.’ But he killed it, I thought.”

Parton liked the finished product so much, she told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’d love to do a whole album with Chris Stapleton. All those songs that we could kill it with. I love him.”
